CORNWALL ONLINE PARISH CLERKS - helping bring the past alive

The parish of

ST CLEER

is located on the south-eastern fringes of Bodmin Moor, in an area known for mining and, at one time, farming. The Moor has been classified as an A.O.N.B. (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

St Cleer

First built of wood around 800 A.D., the church of St. Cleer was rebuilt towards the end of the 13th century and the church tower (97 feet high) more recently in the 15th century. The latter contains a ring of 6 bells.

The parish contains rugged granite outcrops and water features, including Siblyback Lake (a reservoir and watersports centre) and Golitha Falls (a Nature Reserve) on the River Fowey.

The 14th century Well (below left) was once seen as a place of healing and it ages gracefully. It is dedicated to St. Clarus.

King Donierts Stones (below) are two granite slabs with Latin inscriptions, which lie about 1 mile north west of the town of St. Cleer. They are the remains of two Crosses associated with King Doniert (Durngarth) who drowned in the river Fowey in about 875 AD.

All records transcribed so far are on my website. Please visit!

I've been an OPC for some time and have transcribed St. Cleer records since I began. I'm of Cornish descent, with recorded family to the 1300s, but have never been fortunate enough to visit the land of my fathers. The majority of my transcriptions have been placed on my website.

If you find any mistakes or have any more information on these records, I'd appreciate being informed. If you cannot find the information for which you're searching in the data on my website, contact me, and I'll be glad to look-up references.
